I have been out here at the lovely Sands Beach Resort (www.sandsbeach.eu) since the beginning of January and I have loved every minute of it so far. Just a couple of weeks in I decided to go to the Lanzarote International Duathlon at Club La Santa. It was a local race so it seemed like a great way to get a good hard training session in. The race went well and I managed to win comfortably after getting away on the bike. It was really fun to race and a great start to racing for Team TBB. The other newbie on the team Ritchie Nicholls also won the men’s race so it was a good day out for us.
After that we set in to a great 10day block of training where I got introduced to some classic Brett Sutton sessions. I am not going to say exactly what those sessions involved but some of them were totally epic. The sessions were challenging, tough and not like any training I had done before so I really enjoyed it.
Not long after this at dinner one night the manager at Sands Beach, Juan Carlos asked us if we would compete in a 31k off road running race. Of course we were all up for it and decided it would be a great way to get our long run session done and to see some of the sights of the island of La Gracisoa. I haven’t done much off road running in the past but the race was totally unbelievable and has to have been one of the most beautiful run routes I have ever done. It was very much off road and the whole thing felt like a big adventure. We were running on sand, rocks, lava, hills and cliffs. At one point we were basically climbing along the side of a cliff! It was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone! I managed to win the race with Bella in second and another Sands Beach pro triathlete Seleta Castro in 3rd.
Right now we are continuing our training at Sands Beach, enjoying the sunshine and working hard. I know it is becoming a popular training location for many fellow athletes so if you are out here make sure you come and say hi! My next race will be Challenge Fuerteventura in mid-April and I am looking forward to getting there and racing again!
