Since my last blog I have completed my first triathlon of the season which was the Tri 122 Short Course (1k 60k 10k) race in Costa Teguise. It was very much a training race and one to help blow those pre-season cobwebs away. The race started close to Sands Beach and it was really great to have a race literally on our doorstep. The bike was on a tough route that included the climb of Tabayesco and the run was on a path that we train on regularly so it was very familiar to us. I wasn't sure of what my competition would be bike but being a tough race in Lanzarote it's always likely that some strong competition will be around. For me my main competition was winner of the Lanzarote 70.3 Danne Boterenbrood who was also training at Sands Beach. I knew Danne would have a good gap on me out of the water so I didn't want her get any further away on the bike.

I was less than 2 minutes down out of the water though my rusty transition lost me a few more seconds. I set of on the bike fairly hard and kept riding like that. I was riding my training road bike but I felt quite strong and worked pretty hard all the way through the bike as I wanted to see how my legs would be on the run after a really hard bike. Much to my surprise I could see Danne just in front of me at the bottom of climb about 45mins in to the bike and soon passed her to take the lead. I rode hard the rest of the way and was looking forward to 2 lap run on the familiar path. I had planned in my head to cruise the run but as I was on the first lap I could see that fellow Team TBB team mate Ritchie Nicholls (who was leading the men’s race) was about to finish his first lap of the run so my aim for lap one was not to let him catch me before I started my second lap. That definitely made me run harder for the first lap and I managed not to get caught by him! I then backed off slightly for the second lap and enjoyed the shorter. It was a great training race and lovely to compete so close to my home from home at Sands Beach. It was a good day all round for Team TBB UK at the race as Ritchie also won the short course race, Stephen won the Long Course race and Bella Finished second in the Long Course race!

My next race and first major race of the season will be at Challenge Fuerteventura and I am really looking forward to it. I have never been to Fuerteventura so it will be great to get over there and to experience a different Canary Island and to get back to racing properly again.

In other news I am pleased to announce that I have some sponsorship from a Dublin bike shop Wheelworx. I have known Rob and Aisling for a while now and they have always been very supportive and helpful to me. I am really looking forward to working with them and am really grateful for their support for the coming season.
